Business Spotlight: Abernathy & Pickles

Located at 37129 Goddard Road, Abernathy & Pickles is downtown Romulus’ one-stop shop for vintage collectibles and “reloved” furniture. From custom signs and coffee bars to tables, beds and chairs, owner Carol Bevins can turn any old, wooden furniture to a shabby chic repurposed piece.

“You can’t walk into Gardner White or Art Van and tell them you want to customize the end table your grandmother gave you years ago, but you can do that here at Abernathy & Pickles,” said Carol.

Abernathy & Pickles got its start in an unsuspecting location—Carol’s basement—eight years ago. Carol and her husband were tired of seeing beautiful, old wooden furniture tossed to the curb, so they learned the art of refurbishment. After experiencing overwhelming success at The Vintage Market and Motor City Antiques, Carol’s job requests piled up and she quickly ran out of room in her home.

When it came time to choose a new location for her work, Carol was immediately drawn to Romulus’ down-home feel. While she was originally searching for a studio space, not a storefront, Romulus city officials gave Carol the confidence and support she needed to start her business.

“I’m just a person, I’m not a businesswoman,” said Carol “But the City of Romulus was so helpful every step of the process, from purchasing the space to passing inspections.”

Carol sells her custom pieces through the shop’s Facebook page, but she encourages interested buyers to visit the store in the city’s business district. People from all over Michigan, and even out of state, visit downtown Romulus in search of Abernathy & Pickles’ custom furniture pieces.

“I think Romulus is an absolutely fabulous place to run a business so I invite people as often as possible,” said Carol. “I would love to see more people and businesses, especially mom-and-pop shops, consider Romulus a go-to place to live and shop.”
