Business Spotlight: Walter's Bar and Romulus Lanes

Walter’s Bar and Romulus Lanes have been staples in the community for over 75 years.

After successfully running a market in town, Walter Perecki opened Walter’s Bar in 1943 and added the bowling alley two years later. Today, Walter’s granddaughter, Stephanie Wagle, shares ownership of the business with her mother Sylvia, her husband Rob and their son Matt.

“There’s so much history in this building,” says Stephanie. “We have customers who used to be pin boys in the forties. It just feels like home.”

The Perecki family has been deeply rooted in the Romulus community for the better half of a century. Stephanie’s grandparents immigrated to Detroit from Ukraine in the 1920s and later found their way to Romulus. In 1962, Stephanie’s father, Eugene, married her mother, Sylvia, and they made their own home in Romulus. Stephanie and her husband Rob graduated from Romulus Community Schools, as did all three of their children. Before stepping in as owner of Walter’s Bar and Romulus Lanes in 2015, Stephanie was an elementary school teacher in the district.

From bowling and euchre tournaments to trivia night and hosting the Romulus High School bowling team, Walter’s Bar and Romulus Lanes have been generational favorites, with activities for the entire family.

“You name an event, we’ve hosted it,” said Stephanie. “We do children’s birthday parties, weddings, baby showers, funerals and even live bands.”

Out of all the events Walter’s Bar and Romulus Lanes host, Stephanie says surprise birthday parties are her favorite. She loves being part of families’ special moments and seeing the entire room light up with smiles.

This sentiment is another reason why Stephanie and her family have hosted so many fundraisers for community organizations, including Relay for Life, the Romulus Animal Shelter and the Wayne County Young Farmer Agribusiness Program.

Stephanie has found the community ties to be essential to their success, and she encourages aspiring business owners to open shop in Romulus.

“Romulus is an upstanding city with a good group of residents who are supportive of their community,” said Stephanie. “Starting a business is never easy, but in Romulus you’ll end up with a customer base that feels like family. In the end, it’s all worth it.”
