Flowers are a timeless gift that can be given for almost any occasion—and many times, no occasion at all. When Downtown Romulus Flower Shop Owner Rachel Botu opened the store in 2019, it was with the intention of becoming a community florist that would draw shoppers downtown and assist residents through all of life’s special moments.
“We wanted to be there for the community during the good and bad times,” Rachel said. “From the first date, to prom, to the wedding and, inevitably, the funeral.”
Located at 36726 Goddard Road, Downtown Romulus Flower Shop boasts a custom-made flower cooler, one of the only florists in Southeast Michigan with such a design. In addition to the ability to place custom-designed orders over the phone or online, customers can shop the cooler for daily arrangement offerings.
Committed to supporting fellow local businesses, Downtown Romulus Flower Shop also offers a plethora of Michigan-made items, including dog treats, jewelry, greeting cards, lotions, candles, cutting boards and, of course, Sanders chocolates.
While Rachel has always had a passion for creating flower arrangements, she is relatively new to the industry. Prior to opening Downtown Romulus Flower Shop, Rachel worked for a Romulus trucking company for 10 years. After giving birth to her son, Rachel’s husband, Paul, encouraged her to follow her passion. Rachel quickly enrolled in florist classes and found a job with a local florist, where she continued to hone her skills.
It has been nearly a year since Rachel has opened Downtown Romulus Flower Shop and she loves the opportunity the store provides her to interact with the community.
“Meeting new customers and seeing returning customers is rewarding, and it’s my favorite part of the job,” Rachel said. “Since opening the store, it feels like the community is my family because I’m able to connect with residents on a personal level.”
Creating a space within the store where residents feel welcome and at home has always been a priority for Rachel, which is why she created a café-like area in lobby. Residents are welcome to sit on the couch while enjoying complimentary coffee and Michigan-made snacks. Often times, residents will purchase their flowers and spend time in the lobby chatting with Rachel for hours. In the past, the space has been used by local church groups for bible study and coffee, and by local Girl Scout groups as a meet-up location. Downtown Romulus Flower Shop also offers seasonal arts and crafts for families. In the fall, the store held a pumpkin painting event and at Christmas, they set up a free ornament decoration station.
In addition to giving back to the Romulus community as a businesswoman, Rachel also gives back through service. Rachel has served on the Downtown Development Authority Board for almost a year and was recently elected vice president. In this position, she helps the city with planning, improving downtown and creating an all-around more inviting environment for small businesses.
“My family and I have lived in the Romulus for seven years and we absolutely love this community,” Rachel said. “Downtown is a charming area, and we hope our flower shop helps attract residents and people from surrounding communities.”
Downtown Romulus Flower Shop is celebrating its first anniversary on August 22, 2020, by hosting its second Craft & Vendor Show in the parking lot next to the shop. The last show featured 22 vendors and attracted nearly 400 attendees. Money raised through a raffle was donated back to the Romulus Garden Club. At the upcoming Craft & Vendor Show, Downtown Romulus Flower Shop plans to announce a new business name and branding. Interested attendees can RSVP for the event here.
