When Dominque’s daughter was turning three, she and her husband, Jamil, sought ways to save money on birthday parties. A creative at heart and a trained clown, Dominique took up face painting and magic shows. Together, Dominique and Jamil became the event planners and helped with family birthday parties—and word quickly spread. Before long, Dominique and Jamil, had a list of loyal clients and were looking to expand and open as an official business.
In 2015, Dominique purchased an existing events company from a fellow Romulus resident. The name was changed to Colorful Events, LCC, and Dominque began hosting private and community events in the City. Fast forward to 2020, and Dominique’s daughter has taken an interest in the family business. Just like her mom, Nyla is a trained clown and often performs with her parents at events.
“Romulus is a small town, and everybody knows everybody—that’s what I love about it,” Dominique said. “It makes my day when I’m out in the community and kids come up to me because they remember meeting me at an event.”
Tapping into her creativity and flexibility as a small business owner, Dominique pivoted and is now offering virtual and socially distanced events and activities. She recently teamed up with the City to provide entertainment at the drive-in style “Movies in the Park” series. At the first event in the series, Dominique ran a socially distanced game of bingo, and residents participated from the comfort of their own vehicles. On the Colorful Events Facebook Page, Dominique engages the community with virtual activities. Her most recent event was a virtual glitter tattoo tutorial.
“Romulus is my hometown and has a special place in my heart,” Dominique said. “It’s a blessing to have the opportunity to work alongside my family and help provide smiles to the community—especially during these challenging times.”
