Major companies like Amazon and Penske chose Romulus as a place to do business because of the City’s standing as the region’s global logistics hub. Building on the momentum of these recent developments, Kroger has chosen to open a 135,000-square-foot high-tech customer fulfillment center right here in our community.
Kroger’s decision to invest $95 million and create 250 new jobs in Romulus builds on the City’s partnerships with global companies to provide more employment opportunities for residents and to spur economic development.
As the City looks to the future, officials remain committed to increasing convenience and providing a range of retail options for residents. The City of Romulus plans to continue to add new retailers to its growing list of community partners and suppliers.
“The residents of Romulus are honest and hardworking people. We’re pleased to partner with Kroger to offer new jobs that are not only close to home but are well compensated and with a company Kroger’s caliber,” said Mayor LeRoy Burcroff. “We’re committed to continuing to work to introduce additional services to improve the lives of our residents across the City of Romulus.”
Kroger is partnering with Ocado, a world leader in technology for grocery e-commerce, to equip the fulfillment center with state-of-the-art capabilities to prepare grocery orders for delivery in the community anytime and anywhere. With grocery e-commerce on the rise as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kroger’s delivery system will provide residents with critical access to healthy and fresh food right at their front doors. All orders will be delivered by Kroger employees—not contracted drivers. To accommodate orders, Kroger will pull directly from local inventory, guaranteeing fresh and high-quality food every order. At a time when resident safety and well-being is under increased focus, we are excited to offer residents a safe and convenient alternative grocery experience that can be utilized from the comfort and security of their own homes.
The Kroger fulfillment center will be located at 15675 Wahrman Road and is expected to become operational 18 months after the site breaks ground. Visit the Romulus Facebook page for updates.
