Downtown Scarecrow Contest

Our Downtown Scarecrow Contest began in 2015 and continues to grow every year! Residents, organizations, businesses and anyone interested are able to enter a scarecrow to be placed in the downtown corridor during the month of October.

Scarecrows will be displayed in the Downtown Romulus district from October 2nd through November 3rd. Participants must pre-register as space is limited. Registration may be done in person at Romulus City Hall during regular business hours, or submitted via email to mayor@romulusgov.com.

Contest is open to individuals, businesses, organizations and clubs. There is no fee for entry.

All scarecrows must be delivered to Romulus DPW between September 25th and September 29th, 2017. The construction should be durable as they may be subjected to severe weather conditions. Scarecrow entry sponsors are required to monitor the state of their scarecrow for the duration of the exhibit.

All scarecrows must be designed so that they will stand upright and supplied with materials necessary to display them in an upright manner. Commercially made scarecrows are not allowed. 6’ x 3’ scarecrow frames are available for purchase from the Mayor’s Office at City Hall for $5 each on a first come, first serve basis.

Scarecrows must be in good taste and appropriate for viewing by the public and families. Must be absent of adult, political and religious themes. No frightening, scary, violent, gruesome or bloody entries will be accepted.

Display location of the scarecrows will be determined by the City of Romulus. Business Owners/residents wishing to display their entry in front of THEIR location in the downtown may do so without bringing it to City Hall. Pre-registration is still required by September 29th. Please notify the Mayor’s Office if you intend to do this so that accommodations may be made for placement of other entries. Any entry not pre-registered will be removed.

Voting on scarecrows will begin on October 9th and continue through November 3rd at 4:00 p.m. Voting is open to anyone. Voting will be done online in a photo album on the City of Romulus facebook page and in-person at Romulus City Hall, as well as at the Fall Family Fun Festival on October 13th. Winners will be announced/recognized at the November 6th City Council Meeting.

Scarecrows must be reclaimed by their sponsors over the weekend between November 3rd and November 5th. All scarecrows not reclaimed by November 6th will be removed and discarded.
